Training From the Ground Up: A Holistic Lens on BJJ Longevity & Performance - Part 1 of 5 (4 min read)
Feb 28, 2026
I love Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Most of us do. That’s why we keep showing up — before work, after work, when we’re tired, when we’re stressed. For many of us, it’s more than a hobby. It’s therapy, challenge, community, identity. It simultaneously touches something we deeply need in our bodies, our minds and our sense of belonging. Thats powerful.
But if we zoom out for a moment, an honest question appears:
Are we training in a way that respects the art — and the body we rely on every time we step on the mats?
Or are we building skill on top of shaky foundations that might crack under pressure?
As a BJJ practitioner, a holistic health coach and former first responder, I’ve come to see something clearly:
If we don’t build our health and capacity from the ground up, our progress on the mats and in life will eventually stall, fragment, or break down.
This isn’t about doing less.
It’s about building deeper roots and stronger foundations.
I wanted to share 4 major areas I have learned, from study, experience and observation, that every BJJ practitioner must consider to get the most out of their time on the mats:
1. Your “Why” Determines Your Longevity
BJJ is powerful. It gives us infinite challenge, healthy release, confidence, humility…
But without an intentional “why” or “north star” its easy for it to become a pressure valve rather than an effective growth tool.
I once coached a woman who trained very hard — always high intensity, always pushing. When we explored why the intensity felt necessary, it eventually came down to anger. Though this emotion didn’t come across to her training partners, BJJ provided relief. The problem is, her health status was not at a level to support the intensity she was bringing to training. She was at risk of burning out quickly by not acknowledging her deeper why for training BJJ. Her anger.
While its beautiful that BJJ can serve so many people for so many reasons, here’s the analogy I shared to recalibrate the “why” in the context of longevity.
Imagine an old school teapot on a stove. One that when the water boils, it whistles.
Flipping the lid stops the noise — but the heat is still on.
Training intensely to “release” something like anger can be like flipping the lid. The noise quiets. The anger subsides. But the source of anger remains.
Eventually, by ignoring the real issue, the water boils dry. The pot burns — For a teapot, thats damage, but for a human, that’s burnout. Adrenal fatigue, and eventually the potential for health conditions, injury or disease. Im not trying to claim a negative impact of BJJ, but rather, the importance for understanding our true intentions and how we show up on the mats.
Many practitioners train this way — not from anger necessarily, but from stress, self doubt, avoidance, restlessness, or simply habit. I speak from experience.
The problem is many people will say they will just “listen to their body”. But if the root issue remains, what is the cost to your health and longevity?
A sustainable “why” might be:
- A mentally engaging fitness hobby you can do in your twilight years.
- Being a capable, adaptable human through mindful movement
- Developing the ability to problem solve under pressure
- Connecting with like minded people and community
- Developing confidence and mobility in your body
- Mastering the fundamentals of BJJ
When our training is anchored to a long-term vision, intensity becomes intentional — not reactive or unconscious.
Without that bigger orientation, it can be easy to train in ways that slowly lead to burnout.
So lets ask ourselves… Do we want to practice BJJ when we are 60, 70… 80?
Are we avoiding something thats actually going on in our lives by chasing discomfort and the feeling of progress?
Are we respecting the one body we have —
or slowly draining it for short-term validation?
Define your WHY. Practice for longevity, Train intensity intentionally and master your SELF.
